Basement Remodeling Tips
There are a lot of reasons why people choose to remodel their basement-growing families, the desire to rent out a room, or starting a business can all bring about a basement remodel. When a family needs more space, there are a few options available. Here are some basement remodeling tips you can follow in order to maximize the space.
1.The easiest way to get more living space is to sell. The drawback to selling your home is obvious; you have to leave neighbors and friends, and changing schools and jobs. A larger, newer home that's in as good of shape as your current home may be too expensive, so you may save money by remodeling your basement.
2. Adding Space Vertically. Another way to maximize living space is to build another floor on top of the one you already have. Adding a story can double your space, but this option is sometimes cost-prohibitive. You'd have to take the roof off, strengthen the foundation and the walls, and find somewhere else to stay while work progresses.
3. Adding a Room. Adding a room onto the back or the side of your existing home is a commonly-used option. It's not as expensive as building vertically, but pipes and foundation will have to be laid.
4. Forgoing the Garage. A two-car garage can add as much as 400 square feet of living space. The only issue is that garage space is a key selling point for your home.
5. A Good Idea. Remodeling your basement is a cheap way to add space to your home, and it's easy enough that you can do some of the work yourself.
Keep in mind that most basements have part of their foundation underground. Moisture can get in through tiny cracks in the foundation, and it may be a good idea to hire a foundation inspector, who can seal the cracks permanently. The inspector may also check out the water table around the home. You will also want to prevent radon gas. Radon is an odorless, colorless gas that is a byproduct of radium. It's poisonous to humans; even if you aren't renovating your basement, it should be inspected for radon gas emissions.
Planning your basement remodel begins with deciding how you're going to use the space. Think about what you will need as far as utilities and electrical hookups, because you will have to get these installed before walls are put up. You'll also need to decide when you want to do it. Remodeling in the spring or summer means that the furnace is turned off, opening the area more.
You need to set a budget as well. Cash for a basement remodel doesn't need to come all at once; it can be spread over months or years. If you aren't in a hurry, you can do most of the work yourself. However, it's still a good idea to hire a contractor for the heavy lifting. Remodeling your basement is expensive, and should be done (or at least overseen) by a contractor. Hiring a professional and following these basement renovation tips is the best way to make the most of your space.
