Surprising as it sounds there are some flooring materials that just don't stand up that well to having people walk on them. If you have kids or pets it goes without saying that you are going to want to make sure that you get the most durable floors that you possibly can. You are also going to want to make sure that you have durable floors in rooms that get a lot of traffic. In rooms that are not used that often it may be possible to get away with floors that are not all that durable.

You are also going to have to think about how much maintenance you are willing to put into your floors. Some materials like wood look great but they do require effort on your part to maintain them. If you are prepared to do this then they make a great choice. However if you are not going to put in the work to maintain the floors then you are going to want to go with something a that requires less maintenance like vinyl.
